If you’re a World Cup fan, you probably already know that the matches are televised daily at ESPN Zone in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort. You may have even seen fans lining up outside ESPN Zone prior to kickoff.

Now the Downtown Disney District is offering an additional option for viewing the competition. Matches will be televised on a jumbo 10-by-16-foot outdoor LED screen in the Downtown Disney District common area, between ESPN Zone and Earl of Sandwich.

When the World Cup semi-finals, third place and finals matches arrive on July 8, 9, 12 and 13, Downtown Disney District World Cup festivities will also feature a DJ and additional special activities for fans. If you are one of the more than 16,000 runners ‘dropping in’ to participate in The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend, October 3-4, at Walt Disney World Resort, then we have a little motivation to help you with your training.
ATM8067953

From the youngest runners in the runDisney Kids Races to the most experienced runners in the Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and the 10-Miler, we often hear, “it’s all about the ‘bling’.” With that in mind, we are excited to share what waits for you at the finish lines of this year’s events.
ATM8067954

There will be no tricks, just treats when kids receive the Halloween-inspired Donald Duck medallion for participating in the diaper dash, 100m, 200m 400m and 1-Mile races.
ATM8067955

Be careful of hitchhiking ghosts if you are participating in the Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run. New this year, the medallion glows in the dark!

And nothing can be more fitting than the 2014 The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler medal, featuring The Hollywood Tower Hotel. Not only does this medal glow in the dark, the elevator moves up and down.

Now, if you are not running race weekend or just hearing about runDisney, I invite you to check out runDisney.com, register for an upcoming event and put a little ‘bling’ around your neck.

Disney Stars Laura and Vanessa Marano Show Off Their Disney Side Style at Disney Parks

My fellow author Jennifer Fickley-Baker recently shared a video featuring Disney Stars Laura Marano from Disney Channel’s “Austin and Ally” and Vanessa Marano from ABC Family’s “Switched at Birth” during their recent visit to Disney Parks. During their trip to Disneyland Resort, they showed off their Disney Side style in another video recently published on the Disney Style YouTube channel.

The image below contains a few things that Laura and Vanessa selected from Disney Parks. The sequin Minnie Mouse headband is one of the most popular items we carry. The red Mickey Mouse crop top that Vanessa wears isn’t currently offered at Disney Parks, but I found a classic Mickey Mouse tee that works just as well. Finally, Laura is sporting a gray Mickey Mouse shirt that is part of a new art program called “Whimsy.”

Many of these items can be found at select locations in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

In California, the best places to visit first include Disney Vault 28 and World of Disney at Downtown Disney District.

In Florida, I suggest trying TrenD or Zoey & Pickles inside the newly opened Marketplace Co-Op in Downtown Disney Marketplace. You can see an image from Zoey & Pickles in the bottom right corner of the image above.

You may also find a few select items, such as Beautifully Disney cosmetics, on our Disney Parks online store – http://ift.tt/1o2D8uS.

  • Epcot – On July 4, enjoy a special concert of great American songs by Voices of Liberty at America Gardens Theater, where they’ll be performing at 12:30 p.m., 1:45 p.m., and 3 p.m. You can also meet some favorite Disney characters in patriotic attire outside The American Adventure, and catch the Spirit of America Fife & Drum Corps at the pavilion at 1 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4 p.m., and 4:45 p.m. That evening, “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” joins the celebration at 10 p.m., with a heart-pounding, pyrotechnic grand finale.
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios – A “Rockin’ 4th of July Celebration” at the Sorcerer’s Hat Stage on July 4, features the “Rock Your Summer Side” Dance Party, with a DJ and live band. The Hollywood Rockers will take you on a rock ‘n roll road trip across America that culminates with the band playing live during that night’s fireworks spectacular. The celebration kicks off at 6 p.m. and continues through 11 p.m., with fireworks at 10:15 p.m.

Unforgettable Details of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa: Imagineer Joe Rohde on Design and Inspiration

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Joe Rohde, creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, about his inspirations for the design of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa. Joe’s career has included such iconic projects as Disney’s Animal Kingdom; Expedition Everest; Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa; and the upcoming AVATAR-inspired land at Walt Disney World Resort. Today, Joe shares some of the magic and tradition behind what makes Aulani unlike anywhere else in the world.

What is the significance behind the arch logo for Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa?

The curved arch is based on a traditional Hawaiian canoe house as echoed in the framing of the Maka‘ala lobby as well as in the resort’s physical layout.

AML7056944

What was the inspiration for the Maka‘ala lobby?

Maka‘ala does several things all at once. It is a warm and welcoming place that expresses the spirit of aloha, acceptance and inclusion. But it also announces that this place – where you have arrived, Hawai‘i – is a special, unique and important place, and that there are stories to be learned here that you may not know … and LOTS of them. Lastly, it also suggests a feeling of elegance and artistry, which is consistent with true Hawaiian culture.

AML7056945

What was the inspiration for the overall shape and design of Aulani and the Waikolohe Valley?

The resort was designed to reflect the sense of a Hawaiian valley opening out toward the ocean from highlands to lowlands. This organization has many connotations. One is the ahupua’a, the traditional organization of land that followed a watershed from the mountains to the sea and knitted all members of the community together in a working relationship and a functional sustainable relationship to the land.

Another is a Hawaiian concept of time itself as flowing – like fresh water – from the past, which is in the mountains, to the future, which is in the sea. The architectural statements of Aulani tend to follow this organizational layout.

You know, of course, that Waikolohe means “mischievous water.” That name is simply meant to connote the playful aspect of the springs, which spray you from unexpected directions, and the presence of the Menehune. It is true that, along this part of the O’ahu coast, fresh water comes from springs, and we wanted to reflect that but in a fun, mischievous way.

Hawaiian canoes are seen throughout Aulani. Why are canoes such a key aspect of the design?

We wanted to use little clues here and there to celebrate the great canoe tradition of Hawai`i, because these canoes are at the very heart of what makes Hawaiian culture Hawaiian. Without these canoes there would be no Hawaiians at all. They express the highest form of artistry, engineering, symbolic meaning, purposefulness and social cooperation that Hawaiian culture stands for. In particular, we wanted to celebrate the Hokulea, the canoe that awakened the Hawaiian cultural revival in the 1970s and continues today on its worldwide voyage.

NFL Superstar Drew Brees Takes The Field At ESPN Wide World of Sports

“Who Dat” at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort? Well “Dat” is Drew Brees, eight time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl MVP quarterback of the New Orleans Saints.

0626ZW_0520_GN

This week Brees called the sports complex home as more than 300 high school athletes from across the country participated in the exclusive Drew Brees Passing Academy. These young athletes had the opportunity to learn from Brees and train with other NFL superstars such as Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals), Darren Sproles (Philadelphia Eagles) and Darrelle Revis (New England Patriots). Participants were exposed to new training techniques for conditioning and performance, and then participated with team members in a two-day 7-on-7 Tournament. Proceeds from the Drew Brees Passing Academy and 7-on-7 Tournament benefit The Brees Dream Foundation, established in 2003 to help cancer patients with quality care and education for children and families.

Here is a look at the amazing experience these high school athletes enjoyed.

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex allows athletes of all ages and skill levels to compete and celebrate like the pros do; whether they go on to collegiate/professional fame or not, every athlete takes with them lessons learned that shapes their character, personal and professional development. Brees joins a long list of elite athletes such as Kerri Walsh Jennings, Casey Powell and several English Premiere League soccer players, that come to the complex to create unforgettable experiences with young athletes.

New ‘Disney Family of Wines,’ New Menu at Alfresco Tasting Terrace at Disney California Adventure Park

Just in time for summer, the pretty Alfresco Tasting Terrace on the second floor of Golden Vine Winery at Disney California Adventure park is debuting a new menu and a very cool wine list. There are just 40 seats and you don’t need reservations, so it’s perfect for a small Mediterranean-inspired plate and a delicious sip of wine on the open-air veranda.

attadw765234

The unique wine list is the only one at any Disney Resort to feature all eight wineries of the “Disney Family of Wines,” a diverse collection that has a personal connection to the Disney name: an artistic talent, a sense of what makes for good storytelling, quintessential family DNA . . . all of the wineries display qualities long identified with Walt Disney and The Walt Disney Company, carrying on the Disney legacy and typifying the passion, innovation and quality that the name Disney symbolizes.

attadw987231

Only three of the wines have previously been offered at Golden Vine Winery: MacMurray Ranch, Silverado Vineyards and Lasseter Family Winery. The others are new to the restaurant. The family of eight includes:

  • Fess Parker Winery
  • MacMurray Ranch
  • Silverado Vineyards
  • Lasseter Family Winery
  • Gogi (owned by actor Kurt Russell)
  • Frank Family Vineyards
  • Chappellet Winery
  • Skywalker Vineyards
Risotto Bites at Alfresco Tasting Terrace at Disney California Adventure Park Charcuterie Plate at Alfresco Tasting Terrace at Disney California Adventure Park Grilled Shrimp at Alfresco Tasting Terrace at Disney California Adventure Park

Order red, white or rosé by the glass or bottle, or try a featured flight to go with one of these delectable small plates. Guest-pleasing Fritto Misto remains on the menu, a crisp stack of calamari, mussels, green beans, and artichokes with pepperoncini aïoli for dipping. But everything else is new. Try the Aged Cheddar-Risotto Bites with roasted garlic-herb aïoli and marinara. Or the Bruschetta classically topped with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic and Parmesan. The Charcuterie and Cheese board is perfect for sharing and features Gorgonzola blue cheese, Fontina, Prosciutto Di Parma, Spanish-style chorizo, green olives, marinated mushrooms, walnuts, and dry-cured black Beldi olives. Grilled Shrimp gets a kick with Spanish chorizo. Additionally, there’s a filling trio of Beef Tenderloin Sliders with horseradish and caramelized onion aïoli, and an offering of fancy Roasted Duck Rillettes, similar to pâté, and served with crostini, orange marmalade and buttery Castelvetrano Olives.

Sit back, relax, savor and watch the world go by from your second-floor perch. It’s especially delightful after dark, with gorgeous vistas of Ornament Valley inside Cars Land.
