Every Role a Starring Role – Disneyland Resort Balloon Vendor

In the early years, Disneyland park had costumed balloon vendors who sold 25¢ balloons in three areas of the park: Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, and near the main entrance. Of course, guests can still purchase the time-honored souvenir from balloon vendors like Nick Lanham in Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park. In this “Every Role a Starring Role,” Nick talks about his tricks of the trade and memories as a balloon vendor at the Disneyland Resort!

You’ve probably seen our “Ultimate Tweet” of 140 Disney characters that officially announced an All-Night Disney Side Party in the parks to kick off summer. The Magic Kingdom Park in Florida and Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park in California will be filled with Disney heroes and villains from 6 a.m., May 23 to 6 a.m., May 24, 2014, local time.

New Merchandise and ‘Rebel Rendezvous’ Event Coming to Star Wars Weekends 2014 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

SWM095531

One of my favorite events returns to Disney’s Hollywood Studios on May 16, 2014 – Star Wars Weekends! Today, I’m delighted to give you a first look at some of the new merchandise we’ve created for this year’s event. I also have some details about a new merchandise ticketed event coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios on May 15, the day before Star Wars Weekends officially opens. I’ll share more about that event in a moment, but first let’s take a look at the new merchandise poster.

“This year’s merchandise poster contains a few nods to the upcoming Disney XD animated series ‘Star Wars Rebels,” explained Disney Design Group artist Tyler Dumas. “The color orange in the poster was inspired by the ‘Star Wars Rebels’ series’ logo, while the non-specific battle scene is supposed to take place between the events of Episode III and IV. This is similar to the storyline of the upcoming animated series. We also included a Star Speeder 1000 and R2-MK as tributes to Disney Parks.”

SWM095532

This poster will be used on a variety of items including the ever popular Disney pins. The Disney pin team will also release a few other items like concept artwork cards with pins, a limited release mystery set and, my favorite, a Battle of Yavin lanyard with medal.

SWM095533

The toy team created several new items this year including a limited edition figures set; a lenticular 1,000-piece puzzle; a Jabba the Hutt latex character; and a Queen Amidala and Princess Leia Deluxe Fashion Set.

SWM095534THUMB SWM095535THUMB

The limited release Vinylmation mystery series Star Wars: Series 4 will also debut during Star Wars Weekends. Look for a limited edition 9-inch and 3-inch figure set featuring the Rancor and his keeper this year.

To round out the preview, the arts and collectibles team have designed four medium-sized figures (Pluto dressed as an AT-AT is my favorite!).
SWM095536

I promised some details about a merchandise ticketed event on Thursday, May 15. The “Rebel Rendezvous” will be held between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Attendees will receive exclusive access to Darth’s Mall one day before it opens to the public; a limited edition recruitment pack with items like a custom messenger bag, cadet hat, tumbler, lanyard, pin and medal set; preferential opportunity to purchase select 2014 Star Wars Weekends merchandise; and special meet and greet opportunities with characters and Disney artists.

Registration for the event will begin on March 4, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. EST at http://ift.tt/1kybeZt, but you can visit the site now for additional details and restrictions. A catalog with additional merchandise images will be published on March 4.

Make Your Reservation Beginning March 11 for Mother’s Day at the Disneyland Resort

Mom’s special day isn’t until May 11, but you can soon begin making plans to pamper her at Disneyland Resort!

If you are looking for brunch options, Storytellers Cafe at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disney’s PCH Grill at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel make great choices. Highlights at Storytellers Cafe include made-to-order omelets, brioche French toast with blackberry compote, roasted salmon with tangerine vinaigrette and carved beef (we’re partial to the corned beef hash with poached eggs and chipotle orange hollandaise)! Disney’s PCH Grill features a smoked Scottish salmon station, parfait yogurt station, roasted chicken and vegetables and all the breakfast fixin’s, from fluffy scrambled eggs to huevos rancheros. Kids get their own buffet, including Mickey Mouse waffles. Cost for both locations is $33.99, $16.99 ages 3 to 11. Please note that the Mother’s Day Brunch previously held at the Disneyland Hotel will no longer be available.

Other restaurants are creating special dishes just for Mother’s Day. In Disneyland park, Carnation Cafe is serving seared mahi mahi with spinach orzo and a shrimp broth. Plaza Inn will serve a spicy glazed salmon with chipotle-pineapple glaze, veggies and mushroom quinoa, and the special at Blue Bayou is crab-stuffed shrimp with tomato-artichoke sauce.

For a fun treat, you’ll find almost-too-pretty-to-eat Mother’s Day cupcakes at several locations – a concoction of red velvet cake and white chocolate mousse frosting decorated with white chocolate flowers, hearts, strawberry chocolate curls and a flourish of silver “disco dust” – you’ll want to take a picture before you dig in! Mother’s Day cupcakes are available at at Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe in Disneyland park and at Fiddler, Fifer & Practical Cafe and Pacific Wharf Cafe in Disney California Adventure park. You can also find the cupcakes at The Coffee House in the Disneyland Hotel and Surfside Lounge at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.

Magic Kingdom Enhancements Include Special Viewing Area, New Pathways, Gardens

If you’re a regular Disney Parks Blog reader, you’re certainly familiar with one of our guests’ favorite places at Magic Kingdom Park: the Central Plaza area between the end of Main Street and Cinderella Castle. Well, we’ve just begun a project that’ll make it even better. We’re adding several new elements to the area, including sculpted gardens, additional pathways, expanded restaurant seating and even a special viewing area for fireworks and other performances.

Look closely at our fly-through video and you’ll notice that the enhancements will include new trees and more landscaping in the Central Plaza area. The sculpted gardens planned for the location are inspired by the lush grounds seen around European castles and chateaus.

To make it easier to move around, two additional pathways will be built around the plaza.

Also, seating outside of Casey’s Corner and The Plaza restaurant will nearly double in size.

From Disney California Adventure to New Fantasyland, we have a long-standing track record of being able to make enhancements while maintaining the magic of the Disney experience, and we look forward to continuing that tradition with this work.

This multi-phase enhancement project has already begun and it’ll be completed in 2015.

David Wise Celebrates Gold at the Disneyland Resort

“David Wise, you’ve just won the first-ever gold medal in ski halfpipe, what are you going to do next?” Well, you know the rest, right?

GMW873114

On Tuesday, we caught up with the Wise family on Matterhorn Way, where Mickey Mouse stopped by to say hello.

Just one week earlier, David made headlines around the world when he took home the first gold medal for halfpipe skiing. David’s wife, Lexi, made the trip to Sochi, but they were only reunited with their two year-old, Nayeli, the day before their Disneyland trip. How much more could there be to celebrate? Well, it also happened to be David and Lexi’s wedding anniversary!

This was Nayeli’s first visit to the Disneyland Resort, and David said he hadn’t been here since he was her age, so it felt like the first time for him too. Their first Disneyland park attraction as a family? Dumbo the Flying Elephant (Nayeli’s favorite). Later, the family wrapped up their daylong celebration with “World of Color” at Disney California Adventure park.

GMW873115

If I had to sum up the reaction of Disneyland Resort guests as they encountered us taking this picture of David at Sleeping Beauty Castle, I would say, as so many of them did, “Congratulations, David – way to go!”

Tour the Towers with Adventure by Disney: London and Paris

The Adventures by Disney England and France vacation allows Old World charm-seekers to experience world-famous sights in both London and Paris within a single trip. A really unique part of this exciting vacation package is that adventurers will be able to take in the magnificent sights of two prominent “towers” from each country.

In England, families are taken on a privately-guided tour of the Tower of London. As the Guardian of the Crown Jewels, this tower acted as a fortress over many years. It is one of the key symbols of royalty, once housing the likes of William the Conqueror, Queen Elizabeth I and many others. Its rich history gives way to a vast array of stories waiting to be discovered.

ABF984643

After a speedy Chunnel train ride, the Eiffel Tower awaits the group in Paris for an awe-inspiring sight that will last a lifetime. Adventurers can take a closer look at this highly recognizable structure through a tour that takes them straight to the top of this 1,063-foot-tall (324 meters) monument.

ABF984642

If you can’t decide between wanting to visit London or Paris, there’s always the option of visiting both with Adventures by Disney. For more information on how you can get involved in this majestic and history-filled trip, please visit http://ift.tt/1jDjzY8.

runDisney Firsts – Memorable Moments for Kids

Life is full of “firsts.” First steps, first words, first trip to Walt Disney World. And when it comes to runDisney events, “firsts” are just as memorable. In fact nearly 57% of runners registering for our half marathons and marathon are running for their first time.

One of my favorite events during all our race weekends are the runDisney Kids races. From infants crawling to the finish of the diaper dash to 13 year olds participating in the Mile Run, there are distances allowing kids of all ages to get the experience of standing at their first start line and finishing their first race. And what can be more exciting than kids and their parents competing in their first race weekend together – memorable, life changing moments.

Looking for a ‘Cool’ Gift at the Disneyland Resort?

Our Sketch Artists at the Disneyland Resort have been hard at work recreating iconic moments by some of the beloved characters from the Disney animated film “Frozen.”
'Frozen'-Inspired Artwork by Sketch Artists at the Disneyland Resort

It was impossible for me to pick just one, as you can tell, so here are a few others I thought you might enjoy.

Curious about the price? A one-character sketch is $39.95, while a two-character sketch is $64.95, plus tax. Prices will vary based on the number of characters in the sketch.

So if you are looking for a “cool” gift for yourself or someone else, be sure to check out our “Frozen” inspired sketches and more, available now at Disneyana in Disneyland park and Off the Page in Disney California Adventure park.

Disney Cruise Line Port Adventures in Sicily, Italy

With so many new destinations for Disney Cruise Line in Europe this summer, the past several months have been very busy for me as I’ve worked with my team and tour operators in each port to design shore excursions like only Disney can do. Over the next several weeks, I’ll be sharing some of the new Port Adventures with you, starting today with a few in Sicily.

SIC765433

An autonomous region of Italy, Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean. Looking at a map, it’s the island that looks like it’s being kicked by the “boot” of Italy. One of the distinctive geographical features of the island is Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe.

For the first time ever in 2014, Disney Cruise Line will call on Sicily’s port in Catania, the gateway to exploring the island’s ancient churches, beautiful palazzos, lush gardens, magnificent beaches and of course, Mount Etna. I know Disney cruisers will be thrilled with their Port Adventure options on this unique island!

SIC765434

Mount Etna Summit – Families who enjoy active adventures will love summiting the top of Mount Etna. The journey begins with a drive through the beautiful countryside and villages built along the slopes, followed by a cable car ride further up the volcano. From there you’ll be driven by alpine guides in special motor vehicles equipped to navigate the “lunar“ landscape of black dunes to the highest point available for visitation, which is just under the summit. At approximately 8,859 feet above sea level, you’ll have the chance to walk around, observing possible steam/gases and learning about the volcanic system apparatus and lava flows.

SIC765436

Cooking Lesson at a Sicilian Home – There’s no better way to immerse yourself in the culture than to go into the home of a local! There you’ll get a hands-on cooking demonstration on how to prepare delicious Sicilian dishes before indulging in your creations. This adventure, which takes place in one of the picturesque villages on the slopes of Mount Etna, is a must-do for adults and older teens who love cooking (and eating!) We also have another adventure called “Sicilian Cooking for Families” for those of you with younger children.

SIC765437

Sicilian Puppets for Families – Many of our excursions in Sicily are family-friendly, but I am most excited about this one designed especially for those traveling with kids. After a visit to a Puppet Lab to see how the famous Sicilian puppets are built, your family will learn the history of this folkloric art and enjoy a portion of a show at the Puppet Museum. Adding to the cultural experience, you’ll hear the beautifully articulated, theater-style presentation in Italian while your English-speaking guide gives a synopsis of the intricate moves of the onstage scene.

I hope you enjoyed this sampling of the many unique experiences your family can have together in Sicily. As I always say, when the ship’s in port, be sure to venture ashore!

Keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog and Disney Cruise Line Facebook page, and follow @DisneyCruise on Twitter for more about Disney Cruise Line’s voyages in Europe. While you’re on Twitter, join in the conversation by using the hashtag #DCLEurope.
