Calling All Dreamers to Disney Dreamers Academy 2018

We all know that Walt Disney is famous for saying "If you can dream it, you can do it.'' That sentiment is at the heart of our Disney Dreamers Academy program, and for the 11th straight year we are inviting high school students nationwide to come to Walt Disney World Resort to dream a little bigger.

Applications are being accepted now for the 2018 Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE magazine, the one-of-a-kind mentoring program that is helping to inspire young minds from across the country by fueling their dreams and showing them a world of possibilities as they prepare for the future.

Similar to the past 10 years, the 100 selected students will receive an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney World Resort where they will participate in immersive career workshops, ranging from animation to zoology. Each student is taught important skills, such as communication techniques, leadership qualities and networking strategies, and are inspired by celebrity speakers and special guests who share their success stories and provide insight on how to reach for the stars.

And the program is making a tangible difference as evidenced by the many former participants who've gone on to pursue careers as authors, pilots, doctors, entrepreneurs, journalists and engineers, and even work at Disney.

Any U.S. high school student, ages 13 to 19, can apply through Oct. 31, 2017 and selected participants will be announced in early 2018. To apply, just go to DisneyDreamersAcademy.com.

Magic Kingdom Park to pretzel fans — the Jalapeño-Cheddar Pretzel has landed at The Lunching Pad in Tomorrowland! It won't be around forever, so be sure to get one before it returns to orbit.

You don't have to choose between a hotdog or hamburger with June's specialty hotdog at Casey's Corner at the end of Main Street U.S.A. The Cheeseburger Hotdog features an all-beef hotdog topped with ground beef caramelized onions, bacon and cheese sauce.

There's a new breakfast item at Westward Ho! in Frontierland, sure to keep your little doggies movin' along! The breakfast sandwich features bacon, egg, cheddar and pepper jack cheese top a delicious multigrain croissant.

Rey Joins ‘Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away’ at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

This week marks the return of "Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away" after a brief hiatus. This show, presented several times daily in the park's Center Stage area, brings to life iconic moments from the Star Wars saga with compelling film clips and appearances by favorite Star Wars characters from Darth Vader to Chewbacca.

"Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away" celebrates our love of all things Star Wars with unforgettable memories from the entire galactic saga. Now, Rey has officially joined the lineup, appearing on stage alongside lovable Resistance droid BB-8 and clenching a lightsaber in her outstretched arm, just as she did at the conclusion of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

And that's not all that's new! The incomparable nighttime show "Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular" was also recently updated, incorporating sequences that put you right in the middle of thrilling moments from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

It's clear that more than ever, Disney's Hollywood Studios is the place where Star Wars lives!

Active Experiences Rule on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise

Take a Look! Splitsville Luxury Lanes Taking Shape in Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort

Regular visitors to the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort may already have observed the ongoing stages of construction for Splitsville Luxury Lanes, a family-friendly restaurant with a unique combination of dining, bowling and live entertainment scheduled to open this winter.

Now it's time to really start thinking about how we're going to rock (with the live entertainment) and roll (on the Splitsville lanes). Above, we have an illustration of what Splitsville Luxury Lanes will look like when it welcomes its first guests.

The development team is creating a spectacular environment which will fuse modern and retro elements for a lively yet comfortable atmosphere to please guests of all ages. The 40,000-square-foot, two-story facility will be brightened with floor-to-ceiling windows, ample outdoor seating in an expansive patio overlooking Downtown Disney District, two state-of-the-art kitchens, and live entertainment daily.

Like its counterparts throughout the U.S.A., Splitsville Luxury Lanes at Downtown Disney District will be a dynamic recreation destination offering a unique combination of dining, drinks, bowling and entertainment. Features include 20 bowling lanes interspersed throughout the location, four dining areas (indoors and out), two billiards tables, more than 25 flat screen TVs, and the ability to host both live performers and DJs.

The eclectic Splitsville menu will mix lane favorites like hand-tossed pizza and gourmet burgers with chef-driven specialties like grilled avocado with ahi tuna and filet sliders.

And later this year, when the time comes for rockin' and rollin' at the newest Downtown Disney District destination, you should try a Splitsville specialty … fresh-rolled sushi, including the signature Splitsville "Fantasy Roll."

Paint the Roses Red with New Disney Parks Collection by Vera Bradley Blooming This Summer

Disney Parks Merchandise is known for offering fun and stylish apparel and accessories. Recently, Angelique Vu, merchandise product developer for accessories, gave me a first look at a new Vera Bradley collection which left me feeling "curiouser and curiouser." She explained the "Alice in Wonderland"-themed collection contains exciting options never before offered at Disney Parks.

"The collection is called 'Painting the Roses Red,' and celebrates Walt Disney's animated classic from 1951," said Angelique. "This is the first time we've offered a Vera Bradley collection at Disney Parks featuring Disney characters besides Mickey and Minnie Mouse. In addition to handbags, we will be carrying other accessories by Vera Bradley such as a key chain, an iPhone 7 case, and shoes. All of these items are a fun way to add a hint of Disney to any outfit."

The collection contains popular silhouettes including a Deluxe Vera Tote, Vera Tote, Kirby Backpack, and Triple Zip Hipster. Several new items, such as the Mallory Card Case, Wristlet, Mini Hipster, and Cheshire Cat Coin Purse, provide RFID protection for credit and debit cards. Rounding out the assortment, guests will find an 80-inch by 50-inch Throw Blanket and a Soft Fringe Scarf.

"The black, red, and white color block pattern was inspired by the Queen of Heart's playing cards," explained Paola Gutierrez, Senior Graphic Design with Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media Creative Group, who helped create the artwork. "For this collection, we have an overall pattern which can best be seen on the throw. We also have individual character designs on certain products like the Mallory Card Case or the Mini Hipster bag. This is something we haven't done before with a Vera Bradley design."

Paula said to look carefully for silhouettes of Alice, Cheshire Cat, White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter's hat found throughout the artwork.

One of my favorite new items is the Quilted Slip-Ons, which have soft foam collars for comfort, rubber soles, and padded foot beds with coordinating prints.

Grand Cayman is a favorite port of call for many Disney cruisers, and one of the destinations you can visit on select 7-night Western Caribbean voyages aboard the recently enhanced Disney Fantasy. It is the largest of the Cayman Islands, known for its exotic marine life, warm waters and sun-drenched beaches. Here are a few of my suggestions to experience the best of Grand Cayman with your family, both above and below the water …

Amphibious Bus Land and Sea Adventure – What better way to do a land and sea tour than in an amphibious vehicle! Your family will climb aboard the state-of-the-art Hydra Terra for a fully narrated tour of Grand Cayman, both through the streets of Georgetown and in the waters off the picturesque coastline. While cruising past ancient shipwrecks and coral gardens, large LCD monitors will give you an underwater view. Back on dry land, you'll stop at Seven Mile Beach where you can enjoy an afternoon on the beautiful white sand.

SeaWorld Observatory Semi-Submarine – Another unique mode of transportation is the semi-submarine where you can soak up the views from above and below the water – without even getting wet! The vessel has an air-conditioned, underwater observatory five feet below the surface of the water where you can view an abundance of marine life through large windows. On your journey, you'll visit mysterious sunken ships and coral reefs, including Cheeseburger Reef where a diver will enter the water and feed hundreds of multi-colored tropical fish right in front of your window.

Catamaran, Reef and Kittiwake Snorkel Sail – This adventure is on a more traditional island vehicle – a luxury catamaran. Your sailing and snorkeling excursion begins along the beautiful Seven Mile Beach and takes you to two snorkeling stops—one above colorful coral reefs and the other above a historic shipwreck. After swimming with schools of fish and abundant marine life, sit back and relax on the return sail to Sea Grape Beach, soaking up the views of the island's beautiful coastline.

2017 Candlelight Processional Dinner Packages On Sale Today

Sometimes writing about our events is really tough.

You TRY not to play favorites, but as regular readers of the Disney Parks Blog know, my heart has a very special place in it for the Candlelight Processional.

I have memories of attending (and sometimes performing in) Candlelight Processional performances in every type of weather – from unseasonably warm winters where we were in shorts and T-shirts to chilly nights when we've had to bundle up in lots of layers.

It never ceases to thrill me – no matter what the temperature, and I'm always excited to bring you updates on the event – including the fact that dining packages are NOW ON SALE!

As a part of Holidays Around the World at Epcot, the Candlelight Processional presents the traditional story of Christmas in truly spectacular fashion – with a celebrity narrator, a 50-piece orchestra and a mass choir.

Newcomers to the celebrity narrator spotlight this year include Daytime Television Legend Pat Sajak and TV star CCH Pounder, who was recently at Disney's Animal Kingdom for the Grand Opening of Pandora – The World of Avatar.

Returning favorites include television, film and stage superstar Neil Patrick Harris, country megastar Trace Adkins and Contemporary Christian music artist Jaci Velasquez.

Here are the narrators confirmed so far:*

As with last year, in addition to lunch and dinner packages, breakfast options are available at some favorite restaurants in and near Epcot again this year like Akershus Royal Banquet Hall and The Garden Grill. Breakfast, lunch and dinner options are also available this year at Captain's Grille at Disney's Yacht Club Resort, with breakfast and dinner options being offered at Trattoria Al Forno at Disney's BoardWalk.

Disney Parks After Dark: Figment Adds Color At Epcot

When I first visited Epcot in the 1980s, one character I fell in love with was Figment.

Designed specifically for the park's Imagination pavilion, Dreamfinder's description of him couldn't be more spot-on: "two tiny wings, eyes big and yellow, horns of a steer – but a loveable fellow!"

In tonight's "Disney Parks After Dark" photo, this colorful character welcomes guests to the Future World section of the park, just behind the park's iconic Spaceship Earth attraction.

Celebrating Independence Day at Disneyland Resort

The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and Disneyland Resort is gearing up to celebrate Independence Day with days of fireworks, concerts and more! Here's a look at some of the star-spangled highlights we've got planned for the coming week:

• "Disney's Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky" – This special fireworks spectacular rockets into the air above Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland park on four different nights, July 1–4, at 9:30 p.m.
• Main Street Electrical Parade – Take in this American classic, complete with its impressively patriotic 118-foot-long finale, "To Honor America," at 8:45 p.m. or 10:45 p.m. nightly at Disneyland park through August 20.
• Captain America – Over at Disney California Adventure park, you can step up for a heroic encounter with the First Avenger himself, Captain America. He's appearing along with Spider-Man, Black Widow and more as part of the Summer of Heroes through September 10.
• "World of Color" – On July 4 only, you can enjoy a special patriotic pre-show at the start of both the 9 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. performances of "World of Color" at Disney California Adventure park.
• Military Band Concerts – Several military bands are performing at locations across the resort through July 3. Be sure to check out Kyleigh's post for all the details!

To help you get in the spirit, here's a look at "Disney's Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky." Who's ready for some red, white and blue?!

New Pirates Set to Join the Crew of Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland Paris July 24

When Pirates of the Caribbean re-opens at Disneyland Paris on July 24, guests will discover new surprises as well as a band of new buccaneers. The blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" films provided the inspiration for our Imagineering team to come up with new twists and turns in our story, and a chance to introduce new characters and magic to this classic attraction.

Captain Barbossa, from the blockbuster films, will appear in the attraction for the first time, joining a skeletal crew in a scene unique to Disneyland Paris. Also, ghostly visages of Davy Jones and Blackbeard will warn that "dead men DO tell tales!"

Throughout the attraction, we've enhanced the show with new Audio-Animatronics figures, costumes, special effects, lighting and sound, including some of the now-classic musical themes from the films. Of course, the classic "A Pirates Life for Me!" song will continue to underscore the attraction.

You'll even discover that a familiar character is playing a new role joining the pirates ranks and helping the local townspeople "unload" their valuables at the Mercado auction. In the U.S., this famous redhead will appear in a similar scene at the Magic Kingdom Park and Disneyland park in 2018 following a previously scheduled refurbishment. Disneyland Paris guests will also discover some changes to the Blue Lagoon Restaurant, re-opening as Captain Jack's. It seems that Captain Jack won the restaurant in a wager and is now welcoming pirates of all ages to relax over a drink and hot meal. The interior of the restaurant has been re-themed and the establishment has been staffed with a fun-loving band of pirates.

The adventures set sail on July 24 in Adventureland at Disneyland Paris.

ABC’s ‘The Chew’ Returns for 22nd Epcot International Food & Wine Festival Oct. 4-6

Back for the third year, the popular ABC's "The Chew" returns with the dynamic cast to tape five festival shows that will air Oct. 9-13.

With Spaceship Earth as the backdrop, the Emmy Award-winning show hosts will again delight a live audience with on-stage cooking and stories of their Disney adventures plus segments from across Walt Disney World Resort.

"It's magical to see our Epcot stage light up as the show's celebrated hosts cook, dish and entertain each live audience of festival guests," says Epcot Vice President Melissa Valiquette.

Today also kicks off "The Chew's" Magical Culinary Adventure Sweepstakes presented by Hidden Valley Ranch. Best Tips, Tricks and Locations to Capture Stunning Photos of Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

It's National Camera Day – and to celebrate the occasion, two of Nikon USA's best eagle-eyed professional photographers are exploring Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom and offering tips to help you capture your own award-winning images in our new spectacular world.

Regular Disney Parks Blog readers know that in Pandora – The World of Avatar, the land is an attraction to explore in itself with a lush and vibrant landscape that boasts interactive Pandoran flora, pouring waterfalls and flowing streams – both day and night! And to help capture it all, Nikon USA's Sr. Manager of Pro Relations Mike Corrado suggests starting with the right camera lens.

"You see the expansive landscape (of Pandora – The World of Avatar) so you think wide angle (lens) but you also see the details in the foliage and the flowers and really want to get close, so, a macro lens is really ideal to have," Corrado said. "A zoom lens is probably the best thing to walk in with – it covers the wide angle and does a little bit of macro and gets some telephoto."

The detailed landscape in Pandora – The World of Avatar is not only beautiful to photograph but some of it can also help you capture a perfect photo.

"You're provided with all of these great structures (in the land) – whether it's rock work or railings – whatever it is, place your camera on it and use it as a tripod," Nikon USA Ambassador Ron Magill said.

Even though it seems all areas of Pandora – The World of Avatar offer remarkable photo opportunities, there are some top locations Corrado and Magill suggested trying when looking for the perfect image. Check out all five of the locations in the map above.

Disney on Broadway: Stars Set Sail

This summer an incredible new lineup of Broadway stars are entertaining Disney cruisers as part of our Stars Set Sail live concert series presented by Disney Theatrical Productions. Theatrical stars from Disney's Broadway and international shows are joining us on most European cruises aboard the Disney Magic and select voyages aboard the Disney Wonder and Disney Fantasy.

Our lineup of performers includes all-star talent like Kevin Massey who played the leading role in the Broadway production of "Tarzan" and his wife Kara Lindsay from the original cast of "Newsies," pictured above. Theater fans are sure to recognize other big names like Steve Blanchard – the longest running Beast on Broadway – and Alton Fitzgerald White – the longest running Mufasa on Broadway.

Each performer's show in the Walt Disney Theatre is unique, showcasing his or her diverse theatrical repertoire and personal journey to Broadway. Other fun events throughout the cruise may include a chance to personally meet the star at a Q&A session, a late-night show just for adults, a theater class for teens and tweens and more.

So far, guests have enjoyed performances by Bret Shuford ("The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast"), Bobby Creighton ("The Lion King," "The Little Mermaid," "Frozen"), Nicolas Dromard ("Mary Poppins"), Drew Seeley ("The Little Mermaid") and Desiree Davar on the Disney Magic, plus Chuck Wagner ("Beauty and the Beast") on the Disney Wonder. Disney Doodle: Briar Rose Explores Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

In today's Disney Doodle, artist Ashley Taylor imagines what Briar Rose (aka, Princess Aurora) would do if she had the chance to visit the Walt Disney World Resort.

In the 1959 film "Sleeping Beauty," one of the iconic musical scenes takes place in the forest, when Princess Aurora, still in hiding as Briar Rose, sings "Once Upon A Dream" and dances with her forest friends. Ashley used this memorable moment in Disney film history as her inspiration for the "doodle."

"Disney's Wilderness Lodge is surrounded by a sea of trees," she said. "It's easy to imagine Aurora finding a lovely spot to dance with her forest friends!"

The Language of Aloha at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa: Kukuna o ka la

Kukuna o ka la means rays of the sun.

In this series, we've been diving into the Hawaiian language, which is a personal passion of mine. Today I'd like to raise us up into the sky and tell you about the kukuna o ka la, or rays of the sun, in Hawaiʻi.

Throughout Hawaiʻi, and especially here at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, we tell moʻolelo, or stories, about how the demi-god Maui captured the sun. According to some stories, he captured the sun at a mountain just down the road from Aulani called Heleakala. Maui wanted the sun to slow down so our Hawaiian bark-cloth, or kapa, would have time to dry. So, he captured the sun and made it rise and fall on a regular cycle. Now, we are so thankful that he did! You can see this story gloriously brought to life as part of Aulani's KA WA'A lu'au.

During summer at Aulani, you can enjoy the kukuna o ka la in so many ways! You can greet the sun in the morning with yoga at our lagoon. Or perhaps you might enjoy some time splashing around our Waikolohe Stream in an inner-tube that allows you to float through the valley. Or maybe you will play hide-and-seek from the kukuna o ka la by relaxing in one of our poolside cabanas during your stay.

One thing you shouldn't miss is the best show on all of Oʻahu: our beautiful sunset. As Moana sings, "There's a line where the sky meets the sea, and it's calling." Come experience the kukuna o ka la at Aulani.

Celebrate Fourth of July Week with Special Entertainment at the Disneyland Resort

If you are visiting the Disneyland Resort this week, be sure to wear your red, white and blue, and check out the special entertainment leading up to Independence Day. Now through July 3, patriotic performances will pop up in locations across the Disneyland Resort, including performances by the United States Air Force Honor Guard, the United States Army National Guard Band, and the 191st and the 300th Army Band.

Hats Off to New Headwear Coming to the Disney Dream Store at D23 Expo 2017

The D23 Expo 2017 returns to the Anaheim Convention Center from July 14-16 across the street from Disneyland Resort. This Ultimate Disney Fan Event brings together all the worlds of Disney under one roof for three packed days of presentations, pavilions, experiences, concerts, and sneak peeks. Today, I'm excited to share a first look at products coming to the Disney Dream Store, the spot to find Disney Parks-inspired apparel, art, collectibles and much more.

"Disney ear hats are must have item from Disney Parks, so we're delighted to offer a specially designed ear hat at D23 Expo 2017," explained Jeanne Lewis, merchandise product developer for headwear. "In addition to the ear hat, we will debut the new Interchangeable Bow Collection that's coming to Disney Parks this fall. We love being a part of the Disney Dream Store as it's a wonderful way to introduce new products to our most enthusiastic Disney Parks' fans."

You may recall getting a first look at the Interchangeable Bow Collection last December in a Disney Parks Blog Unboxed video.

To start your headband collection, you will need the mouse-eared headband that comes with a removable sequin-covered bow. This starter headband contains three spaces where an interchangeable bow can be attached using a clip.

Guests will also find six Disney character-inspired bows sold separately, which can be easily attached to the starter headband. Jeanne told me there will be 10 specially designed bows available when the collection is officially released this fall at Disney Parks.

Finally, Jeanne shared with me a limited edition, genuine leather hat that celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Presented in a decorative treasure box, this hat will contain a pirate-themed metal medallion, and will have an edition size of 230. It's the perfect hat to wear when visiting the Walt Disney Archives Exhibit, "A Pirate's Life for Me: Disney's Rascals, Scoundrels and Really Bad Eggs," at the D23 Expo this year.
